Cam Cole: Well, a lot of people said it was Tiger Woods’ Masters to lose.
Few could have imagined the lengths to which he’d go, to do it — or the lengths to which the Masters rules committee would go, to ensure that he didn’t. At least, not before two days of guaranteed boffo weekend TV ratings.
A day after infuriating much of golfdom by singling out a 14-year-old Chinese boy, Guan Tianlang, to pay for the slow-playing sins of all of professional golf, the green-jacketed guardians of the rules were forced to deal with a much bigger fish.
The rules committee penalized Woods two strokes for his illegal drop on Friday, leaving him five back of 36-hole leader Jason Day, rather than three, but elected to waive the usual disqualification penalty for signing for a lower score, citing exceptional circumstances.

Lindsey Vonn is at the Masters to watch boyfriend Tiger Woods go for his fifth green jacket — but don’t expect to see her following him around the course.
Vonn is still recovering from surgery on her right knee after a horrific ski crash that ended her season at the world championships two months ago. Vonn, who is still wearing a brace, said she will probably watch most of the tournament from the clubhouse.
“I can’t really walk too much,” Vonn told the New York Times. “And it’s so hilly here.”
Tiger Woods is back to No. 1 in the world with a game that look as good as ever.
Woods tied a PGA Tour record Monday by winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational for the eighth time, and this one had some extra significance. It returned him to the top of the world ranking for the first time since the final week of October 2010, the longest spell of his career.
Woods fell as low as No. 58 in the world as he coped with a crisis in his personal life and injuries to his left leg. One week after he announced he was dating Olympic ski champion Lindsey Vonn, Woods celebrated his third win of the season, and his sixth going back to Bay Hill a year ago.
“It’s a byproduct of hard work, patience and getting back to winning golf tournaments,” Woods said.

Stormed away: Tiger Woods is going to have to wait one more day to try to reclaim No. 1 in the world.
Moments after Woods made a 10-foot birdie putt on the second hole, a vicious thunderstorm packing gusts that topped out at 62 mph interrupted the final round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational and wiped out play until Monday.
The storm dumped nearly 1 1/2 inches on Bay Hill and formed small ponds in the fairways — there was even a fish in the middle of the 18th fairway. The wind toppled the TV tower behind the 10th green, which was a pile of metal poles, wood, mesh netting and had a stationary camera in the middle of it all.

Tiger Woods had gone more than three years without a World Golf Championship. He had no trouble remembering the drill.
He sat at a table with the blue Gene Sarazen Cup trophy – he has six just like it at home – and signed a stack of flags for posterity and charity after a two-shot win that was never in question during the final two hours on the Blue Monster at Doral.
Woods entertained a few questions about his new 5-wood, how his performance stacked up with a four-shot win in January at Torrey Pines and whether he thought Rory McIlroy, now overlooked as the No. 1 player in the world, was on the right track.
“Can the Masters get here soon enough?” someone else asked.

Tiger Woods is a winner again at Torrey Pines, and the only question Monday was how long it would take him to finish.
Woods stretched his lead to eight shots in the Farmers Insurance Open before losing his focus and his patience during a painfully slow finish by the group ahead.
Despite dropping four shots over the last five holes, he still managed an even-par 72 for a four-shot victory on the course where he has won more than any other in his pro career.
