Do you think Joe Biden likes their outfits?: U.S. Vice President Joe Biden shook hands with Army’s Nate Combs before Army took on Navy on Saturday. Army upped its game in the uniform department, paying tribute to World War II’s Battle of the Bulge with a historical map printed inside the team jersey’s numbers and on the helmet stripe, gloves, sleeves and shoes. Navy came out on top on the field, though, winning the rivalry game for the 11th straight time by a score of 17-13. (Photo: Hunter Martin/Getty Images)
Welcome to the second annual Carrier Classic: The first event, held last year, was a magnificent spectacle between North Carolina and Michigan State attended by President Barack Obama on the USS Carl Vinson outside San Diego.
The contest raises money for several groups that help troops and veterans. It was a showcase for Veterans Day weekend. Late Friday afternoon, the Yorktown hosted a women’s game as No. 7 Notre Dame beat No. 19 Ohio State 57-51 without any problems on the court. But the men’s games had to be called off because of “condensation.”
“We’ve got to go back to work and maybe become meteorologists and do some things different. We and the Navy are committed to the event and doing it right,” said Alan Verlander, director of sports and entertainment for the city of Jacksonville.
