The Cleveland Browns traded running back Trent Richardson to the Indianapolis Colts on Wednesday, a stunning move just two games into this season and only one year after drafting him in the first round.

Richardson was dealt for a first-round selection in next year’s draft, when the Browns will have two opening-round picks. Cleveland is rebuilding and the team hopes to use that pick to help turn around a floundering franchise mired in losing for more than a decade.

Such a turnaround was what the Browns had in mind when they took Richardson with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2011 draft.

Lionel Messi scored a hat trick as Barcelona opened its Champions League campaign with a dominant 4-0 win over Ajax on Wednesday.

It was a different story for Jose Mourinho, though, as Chelsea made a losing start for the first time as Basel came from behind to win 2-1 in London and add to the difficulties of the “Special One” during his Stamford Bridge homecoming.

Last season’s runner-up Borussia Dortmund also had a bad night, losing 2-1 at Napoli with both coach Juergen Klopp and goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller being sent off.

Jim Furyk put his 59 behind him with a round that was 10 shots higher Saturday in the BMW Championship. Now all he wants is a trophy.

Furyk recovered from a sluggish start with three birdies in a five-hole stretch around the turn. A three-putt bogey from 30 feet on the par-5 18th forced him to settle for a 2-under 69 and a one-shot lead over Steve Stricker.

It was a far different finish from Friday, when Furyk hit a wedge to three feet for birdie on his final hole (No. 9) for a 12-under 59, becoming only the sixth player in PGA Tour history to hit golf’s magic number.

Toronto’s Daniel Nestor and Vancouver’s Vasek Pospisil hung on for a 6-7 (6), 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (5), 10-8 victory over Serbia’s Nenad Zimonjic and Illja Bozoljac on Saturday to put Canada on the verge of its first-ever Davis Cup final.

Canada has a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five tie heading into the final two singles matches on Sunday.

In the marathon fifth set, Pospisil got the opportunity to serve for the match after Zimonjic double-faulted before volleying into the net on consecutive points to give Canada the only break.

A lacklustre Manchester United required a fortuitous penalty converted by Robin van Persie and a late free kick by Wayne Rooney to overcome 10-man Crystal Palace 2-0 in the Premier League on Saturday.
United manager David Moyes earned his first victory at Old Trafford but only after promoted Palace had midfielder Kagisho Dikgacoi sent off for a 43rd-minute foul on Ashley Young that proved to be the turning point in the match.
Van Persie slotted home the resulting penalty, even though the foul was committed outside the box, and Rooney — wearing a thick, black headband to cover a deep gash to his forehead sustained two weeks ago — completed an uninspiring win in the 81st minute.(Photo by Michael Regan/Getty Images)

NASCAR added Jeff Gordon to the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship field Friday, a stunning and unprecedented step in the fallout from at least two attempts to manipulate the results at the season-ending race at Richmond last weekend.

NASCAR chairman Brian France said he had the authority to expand the field to 13 drivers for the first time since the format was implemented 10 years ago.

Front Row Motorsports asked for a deal from Penske Racing in the closing laps at Richmond and then helped make sure Penske’s Joey Logano made the Chase field by having one of its drivers, David Gilliland, slow down, according to an Associated Press review of radio communications.
