New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera says he will return to the mound by 2013, vowing to overcome a knee injury that figures to end his season.
Rivera had hinted at the start of spring training that he would retire after the 2012 season, and he wasn’t sure what he would do after tearing his right anterior cruciate ligament while shagging fly balls during batting practice Thursday.
Back at Kauffman Stadium on Friday, the 42-year-old closer firmly said he will not allow his career to end this way.
“I’m coming back. Write it down in big letters. I’m not going out like this,” he said. “This has me thinking, I can’t go down like this. If it takes two, three, four, five, seven more (seasons), whatever it takes.”

Big brothers stick up for little brothers and that is exactly what Henrik Sedin did Wednesday night.
When everyone else in the Vancouver Canucks dressing room — likely on the instructions of the team’s media relations staff — was claiming not to have seen Duncan Keith’s blatant first-period elbow to the head on Daniel Sedin, Henrik stepped forward and spoke his mind.
It was a cheap shot, he said, and one that the Canuck captain suggested followed a threat to Daniel by Keith, who had been hit by Daniel along the side boards earlier in the period.
“It’s one of those hits where things were said before from a certain guy and he did what he wanted to and that’s too bad,” said Henrik, who is a few minutes older than his twin brother. “But again, they are tough team over there and we’re the diving bunch so I guess there’s not much to say about that.”
Tiger’s Achilles heel seems to be his Achilles tendon. Woods pounded a 321-yard tee shot on the 12th hole Sunday in the Cadillac Championship when he winced, slumping over against his driver, and the hobble became an unmistakable limp. Moments later, he shook hands with Webb Simpson and told him, “I’ve got to go in.”

A slight improvement
Edmonton Oilers winger Taylor Hall still has quite the shiner from his little accident during the team’s warm-up last week. But the injury was the least of his problems on Saturday night, when he questioned coach Tom Renney’s decision for pulling their goalie. Photo: Larry Wong/Postmedia News

This doesn’t look good
