National Post Sports

Critics of the Olympics point to the trivial nation of some of the sports involved. Of course, they are deadly serious to athletes involved, who train all of their lives in order to excel in competition. But you could easily criticize Canadians for becoming invested in the welfare of a judo competitor when they do not care for the other 206 weeks of the quadrennial. Certainly, there is some hypocrisy there.
On the other hand, falling in love with an otherwise obscure sport is a good chunk of the Olympics’ charm. On that note, beach volleyball is a ton of fun to watch.
