Beyond his professional ascent — from 24th pick in 2006 to backup point guard to solid starter to borderline all-star — Kyle Lowry plays with a sandpaper quality. Ask Philadelphians what it means to be a player from the city and you get “tough,” or synonyms for it, thrown back at you. It is a rugged, relentless style that plays well in Toronto, as witnessed by the city’s love for Alvin Williams at the turn of the millennium. Dave Distel, who is still close with Lowry, says Lowry will “run through a wall” to win a game. He is a manifestation of the city’s basketball ethos: Wake up, work, win, do it again.
